Saturday, January 23, 2010
Destin Community Center

The Destin History and Fishing Museum held their annual Gumbo Contest and Silent Auction Saturday, January 23 at the Destin Community Center. This event was originally held for many years by the Museum when it was located on Hwy. 98 near McGuire’s Restaurant. The event was started again when the Museum reopened in its current location on Stahlman Avenue at the site of the old Destin Library. Ticket holders enjoyed a Silent Auction of 40 packages, live music by Rusty & Jabo of BanjoRama, and gumbo from 26 local contestants. The competition was very close and the winners were: Individual Category First Place: Sherri Jones and Individual 2nd Place: Lori Schmitz-Janowski. Restaurant Category First Place: Back Porch and Restaurant Category Second Place: Another Broken Egg. The People’s Choice voted on by the day’s gumbo samplers was the restaurant 790 on the Gulf. The Museum is very appreciative to all that supported this fundraising event by their donations or participation. Special thanks go to the judges: Marissa Benton-Walton Co. Retired Principal, Guy Donaldson-Guy’s Glass, Petty Officer Luttermoser from the Coast Guard, David Marler-Ship Captain Tidewater Marine, Dan Martin-Pelican Beach Resort, Desiree Simpkins-Community Center, “Woofy” Ramone-99 Rock Radio, and Felix Romero-Destin Fire Department.
